Expectancy of Good

August 20, 1998

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

Matthew

"Expectancy of Good" needs proper interpretation to be effective Christian Science.  The key can be found in the root of the word expectancy, meaning "observing, watching, sight," and Mrs. Eddy's definition of Good: "God; Spirit; omnipotence; omniscience; omnipresence; omni-action." (Science and Health, pg. 587:19)  Therefore our subject was living Good as the only cause and effect.   Anything less is a hit or miss affair (a.k.a. semi-metaphysics).

Working in the light of this understanding, some of us experienced living out from Good and saw this not only in greater peace but more harmonious happenings.  Our discussion dealt mostly with demonstrations as illustrations of Truth coming to view and lessons learned.

For instance, one of our members entered her elevator one day to find posted instructions of actions to take when the elevator got stuck.  As she reached out to divinity for protection, she discovered the wondrous fact that "God is the only Mind of this elevator," a very living presence, indeed a sort of modern day re-enactment of the Christ Jesus story, the divine all-harmony (Christ) represented by the highest human manifestation (proper function of the conveyance).

Another member was doing work for a family meeting held out of state. Afterwards, one of the participants was deeply shamed by his nervous performance which others called attention to in spite of his immense contributions to the contract under discussion.   Our member, knowing all the while the absolute metaphysics of the case (e.g. family is a word for God being familiar with Himself, one Mind only in attendance, Good alone knowing and doing all, etc.), was able to comfort this participant with the idea of paying no attention to appearances, that things don't always look that great when wonders are being accomplished (e. g. the crucifixion) and keeping our eyes on the prize.  The whole thing worked out wonderfully and showed our member some very helpful points for handling all the news stories this week.

Several other healings were briefly shared.

A member received several job offers during the week as he opened his thought to the ever-presence of Good.

Another secured a "really good therapist," after many mishaps in this area over the years.  The group had worked on this with our member in the meeting of August 6th.

Another was instrumental in helping a middle aged man face up to his sexual orientation during the week.

Another member gave us a delightful description of a day in Mikonos many years ago before he came to Christian Science.  He awoke one morning determined to have a good time no matter what.  Things had been going awry and even continued to do so that day, but he persisted with his new attitude. Tours fell through, dates were not kept and he even found himself alone as the dance hall closed that night.  But, good was all he acknowledged. On the bus returning to the hotel he found a companion for the night.

One member said our work on the topic helped him "ride loose in the saddle" this week as all the news stories unfolded. He was able to avoid a lot of judgmentalism, personal sense and national or political calculation.  He saw the present revelations and upheavals as mortal mind's  representation of the convergence of opposed interests which until now have been artificially  separated or hidden from view. Right versus left, private versus public life, wealthy versus poor, this religion versus that and so forth.  Everyone seems to be in everyone else's face.  But the oppositions and horrific problems arising therefrom are only dualistic (i. e. mortal) language for the Fact that infinite, eternal Good is all.  A trial is an affront to the level of belief that needs piercing.  And the Science of Being is what awaits.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy

The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love.

Desire is prayer; and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires, that they may be moulded and exalted before they take form in words and in deeds.

ELIAS. Prophecy; spiritual evidence opposed to material sense; Christian Science, with which can be discerned the spiritual fact of whatever the material senses behold; the basis of immortality.

GOOD. God; Spirit; omnipotence; omniscience; omnipresence; omni-action.

PROPHET. A spiritual seer; disappearance of material sense before the conscious facts of spiritual Truth.

Unity of Good, by Mary Baker Eddy

A lie has only one chance of successful deception,—to be accounted true. Evil seeks to fasten all error upon God, and so make the lie seem part of eternal Truth.

Error says God must know evil because He knows all things; but Holy Writ declares God told our first parents that in the day when they should partake of the fruit of evil, they must surely die. Would it not absurdly follow that God must perish, if He knows evil and evil necessarily leads to extinction? Rather let us think of God as saying, I am infinite good; therefore I know not evil. Dwelling in light, I can see only the brightness of My own glory.

Error may say that God can never save man from sin, if He knows and sees it not; but God says, I am too pure to behold iniquity, and destroy everything that is unlike Myself.

God says, I show My pity through divine law, not through human. It is My sympathy with and My knowledge of harmony (not inharmony) which alone enable Me to rebuke, and eventually destroy, every supposition of discord.

Christian Science is both demonstration and fruition, but how attenuated are our demonstration and realization of this Science!
